Obituary

Funeral services for Julius A. "Van" VandeVoorde, 91, formerly of Coal Valley, are 9 AM Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation is 3-7 PM Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a liturgy service will be read at 7 PM. Memorials may be made to Alleman High School. Julius died Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. He was born July 25, 1914 in Fairfield, IA, the son of Rene and Irma (Van Hollebeke) VandeVoorde. He married Rose Marie "Sis" Meersman, December 27, 1941 in Moline. She died October 28, 2002. Julius had a passion for flying. He purchased his first airplane at the age of 18 and logged over 23,000 flight hours in his lifetime. He was a pilot for Deere & Company retiring in 1974. He was a captain in the US Army Air Corp during WWII, among tours he flew the Hump in India. In earlier years he ran the Hi-Way Supermarket on 19th Street, Silvis Heights. Julius dearly loved his wife and his family. He enjoyed being around people. Julius has a love for people that made it easy to love him back. Survivors include his children and spouses; Gerald and Nancy VandeVoorde, East Moline, William and JoAnne VandeVoorde, Davenport, Daniel and Mary Jane VandeVoorde, East Moline, Diane and Douglas Ferguson, Davenport, Kathleen and Richard Thomas, Davenport, Marcia and Leon "Buck" Wulf, Long Grove, IA, Mary and David Bizarri, Coal Valley and Julie and Steve Bush, Milan, 29 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a sister Elsie Havens, Davenport.
