Obituary

Kenneth R.Thomas, 86, formerly of Moline, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at IU Health West Hospital, Avon, Indiana. Services are 10 am Friday, April 15, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church of East Moline, followed by interment at Rock Island National Cemetery at 2 pm, Friday, April 15. He was born November 28, 1924 in Paulding, Ohio to Minnie Font and Ray Thomas. He married Bonnie Jean Simpkins September 14, 1950 in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Oakwood High School and served in the Navy during WWII. He received a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Ohio State University and was employed at the John Deere Technical Center in Moline for 32 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 60 years where he served as deacon and trustee. In retirement he wove more than 500 rugs on a hand loom and gave them all away. He volunteered at Christian Friendliness, The Gideons International and Arrowhead Ranch. He also loved to hike, having completed a section of the Appalachian Trail solo. Up to his death he was an avid euchre and cribbage player with friends and family. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Thomas, sons Steven, Daly City, California, Mark (Vicki), Houston, Pat (Debra), San Diego and daughter Barbara (Michael) Homoya, Brownsburg, Indiana; grandchildren Amy Thomas, Aaron and Wesley Homoya, Eva and Vivian Thomas and Hanah, Dylan and Rachel Thomas; great-grandchild Emma Thomas; brothers Don Thomas, Loren Thomas and sisters Edna Parrish and Evelyn Deisler. He was preceded in death by his brothers Carl and Robert, his sister Velma Keck, and a grandchild, Kenneth Homoya. Memorials may be made to Christian Friendliness of Moline and the First Presbyterian Church.
