Konstantinos Theofilis (Kostas, Gus) 94, of East Moline, IL, passed away on Monday, November 14 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Services will be 10:00AM Saturday at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline where he was an active member. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery, Moline, IL. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a Trisagion (Prayer) Service will be held at 6:30 pm. Kostas was born February 2, 1922, in Kollines, Greece, the son of Vassilios and Stamata Kalambokas Theofilis. He married Panayiota "Pam" Petrou November 10, 1952, in Kollines. She died September 19, 2009, since which time, he has missed her incredibly. Kostas was the middle child of seven children and his father died when he was ten years old. At age 12 he moved to Nafplion, Greece, where he ran a kiosk by the sea. He moved back to Kollines to help his mother with farming and raise his younger siblings. At age 18, he watched their home being burned by the Germans during World War II. While rebuilding, he had a near death experience when a tree, intended for lumber, crushed him. For that reason, he received an honorary discharge from the Greek Army. He was one of the founders and stockholders of the olive oil refinery. He served as president of his village and improved the roads during his time. Later, he operated a general store which also served as a gathering place dear to all in the village of Kollines. After immigrating to the United States where he became a citizen, he worked at McLaughlin Body Co. retiring in 1984, and several taverns in the area. He was always very sociable, loved to be surrounded by friends and family, and really enjoyed playing pool, as well as gardening. Survivors include his daughter, Georgia (George) Eleftheropoulos, East Moline; sons, Bill (Tracey) Theofilis, Moline, Chris Theofilis of East Moline; grandchildren, Sophia (Derek), Katrina (Andrew), Dino, Christopher, Stephanie, Lindsey(Nick), and Kayla; great grandchildren, Georgia, Nico, Zoe, Adalynn; sister, Helen Petaros, Silvis. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, siblings, Dimitrios, Aggeliki, Nickolaos, Penelope, George, and two infant brothers. Memorials may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline.
