Ladd was born on December 8, 1937, to Henry and Lillian (Pettersen) Poell. He graduated from Dubuque High School in 1956 and shortly after, met his best friend and the love of his life, Helen (Tholl) Poell. They married on December 6, 1958, at St Patrick's Catholic Church, Colona, IL. Together they raised their three children, Terri, Tim, and Sue.
He was a carpenter by trade, and in his mid-twenties, he went to work for Moline Consumers (now Riverstone) as manager of the precast division. He retired from there in 2002 as manager of marketing and sales of the concrete division. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and volunteered for the SPEC program.
Ladd had a great sense of humor and was a master storyteller. The most important thing to him was spending time with family. He had a passion for boating and enjoyed cruising the Mississippi River with family and friends. He enjoyed building and fixing things with his hands. He also enjoyed dancing and spending time with a special group of friends. He loved all animals and feeding the birds. He looked forward to his daily morning coffee breaks with his buddies.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 66 years, Helen and their three children, Terri (Randy) Borkgren, Cambridge, IL, Tim (Heather) Poell, London UK, and Sue (Greg) Kistler, Muscatine, IA. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Nick (Molly) Borkgren, Chad (Emily) Borkgren, Becky (Scott) Hornblower, Matthew Poell, Michelle (Alec) Poell Pronos, Christina (Job) Kistler Onyango, Samantha (Iain) Kistler O'Connor, Steven Kistler, and Michael Kistler. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren, Bonnie, Ellie, Breely, Carter, Greyson, Charlotte, and Cali. Other survivors include his brother Tim (Laura) Poell, brother-in-law Ed (Janie) Tholl, and sisters-in-law Maggie (Jim) Bradley and Rose Tholl.
Those who passed before him are his parents, Henry and Lillian, his in-law parents, Ann and Bernard Tholl, and brothers-in-law Bernie Tholl and Jerry and his wife Linda Tholl.
A heartfelt thanks go to his Hospice team and caregivers, who with their loving care and compassion, allowed Ladd to remain in his home with his wife and his cat, Joey.
Ladd was a man of faith. He was a loving husband and father. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a great friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
