Obituary

Funeral services for Lawrence "Lorney" Vander Beke, 93, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00AM Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church East Moline, IL. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery and Mausoleum, East Moline, IL. Visitation will be 4-7PM Tuesday (today) the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL where a rosary will be recited at 6:30PM. Mr. Vander Beke died Sunday, December 10, 2006 at Trinity Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Davenport, IA. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Trinity Pathway Hospice. Mr. Vander Beke was born November 7, 1913 in East Moline, IL, the son of Maurice and Clara (Versluis) Vander Beke. He married Alma Fratzke (from Independence, IA) June 24, 1935 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. She died December 21, 1993. Lorney was a well known businessman who co-owned and operated Vander Beke Cleaners, in East Moline and Moline, IL. Lorney loved all sports, especially football. He was the starting quarterback at UTHS during his sophomore, junior, and senior year (1930,1931, and 1932). He also started varsity basketball for two years. In football he was known as a "triple threat" He could run, pass, and kick as well as return punts. Lorney and Les Lundeen were the first varsity football players to make the Quad City Varsity Conference in their junior years. He was also active in East Moline City Affairs. He was elected on the East Moline City Counsel running on the independent ticket. He served for many years under three mayors: Charles Carpentier, Ray Klingbiel and Harold Ryan. As of this date he was the youngest Alderman to be elected in East Moline. He was also the youngest President of the East Moline Rotary Club, where he served on the committee for the new addition to the East Moline Public Library. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and George Goebel of Bettendorf, IA; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Vander Beke of Lincolnshire, IL; granddaughters(spouse), Elizabeth (Lionel) Goebel Hawkins of Chicago, IL, Anne (Sean) Goodman of Bettendorf, IA, Nicole Vander Beke of Lincolnshire, IL; great granddaughters, Emily and Beatrice Goodman of Bettendorf, IA; sisters in law, Gerry Vander Beke of East Moline, IL, Edna Grassley of Rock Island, IL, Penny Fratzke of Brandon, IA. Lorney is preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Margaret Laird, brother, Gaston "Stoney" Vander Beke who died May 01, 2006. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com
