Obituary

Funeral services for Lawrence J. "Larry" Burns Sr., 80, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 PM Monday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 2:00PM. Mr. Burns died Saturday, July 07, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport, IA. In lieu of flowers and gifts, a memorial fund has been established. Larry was born March 5, 1927 in Rock Island, IL, the son of Lawrence A. and Agnes (Van Hoe) Burns. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He married JoAnn Gremonprez September 9, 1950 in East Moline. He had worked at the Van Hoe Funeral Home for 55 years. He had been active in local politics, where he served in different capacities including South Moline Township Supervisor for 21 years. He had been a lifetime member of the East Moline American Legion Post 227 and the East Moline AMVETS. Larry was a Die Hard Cub Fan and had a love for train travel and train memorabilia. His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include: his wife of 56 years, JoAnn Burns of East Moline; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Burns of East Moline, Pat and Gordon Bates of Davenport, Christy and Steve Layer of East Moline, Mary and Kevin Officer of West Des Moines, IA, Julie and Phil Gambon of Coal Valley, IL; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Burns Jr. of East Moline, Mike Burns of East Moline; 21 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Bill Franklin of Torrance, CA.
