Leo C. Walz Sr. passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. Funeral services for Leo will be 10 AM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Entombment will be in Moline Memorial Park Mausoleum, Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct Military Honors. Visitation is 4-7PM Tuesday at the funeral home, with a prayer service to be recited 3:30PM. Memorials may be made to Hope Creek. Leo was born March 21, 1918 in Whittemore, IA, and raised in Hollandale, MN. In 1936 he graduated from High School in Albert Lea, MN. He married Thelma Rose Abrams on September 18, 1942 in Riverside, CA. In WWII, Leo served in the 440th Army Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He drove a 2 ½ ton truck onto the beach of Normandy on D-Day. He subsequently fought in five major battles in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. Leo was an avid bowler, bowling in many local leagues. He attended the annual National Bowling Congress Tournament for thirty consecutive years. He bowled until he reached age 92. He also truly enjoyed golf and bingo. Leo Worked for John Deere Harvester until his retirement in 1985. After that he worked part time for Staff Management Inc. for sixteen years. Leo was a member of St. Ann Parish, East Moline. Leo is survived by his wife Thelma "T" and by their son, L. Carl (Pamela J.) Walz, East Moline, two grandchildren Miranda (Andy) Maberry, East Moline, Brad (Jenny) Walz, East Moline, two step-grandchildren, Joyce (Dereck) Smith, Norfolk, VA and Chad (Heather) Coyne, Orion, IL, three great grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his remaining siblings, sisters Dolores (Cal) Overby, Austin, MN, Mary Helen O'Neill, Bettendorf, IA; brothers, Albert (Yvonne) Walz, Rochester, MN, John Walz, Alexandria, MN and by sister-in-law Vicki Walz, Silvis. And many cousins, nieces and nephews. His parents, three sisters and a brother preceded him in death. Leo's family is truly grateful for the excellent care he received at Hope Creek Care Center and a special thanks to the Genesis Hospice Program.
