Obituary

Linda M. Glackin, 71, of East Moline, IL died Wednesday April 10, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation is 2-5PM Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 2PM. Linda was born on September 18, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey to Norman Layland and Agnes Reynolds. She was a graduate of St. Rose of Lima Grammar School and Good Council High School, Newark, New Jersey. She graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from the College of Saint Elizabeth in New Jersey. As a part of the Sisters of Charity, Linda (Sister Jane Agnes) taught at East Orange High School, where her love of teaching began. Linda met James Glackin while taking graduate classes at the University of Notre Dame and they were married on July 22, 1972. She continued teaching at Moser Secretarial School and Robert Morris University in Chicago IL. They moved to East Moline in 1979 with their two sons, Patrick and Kevin, where Jim worked as General Manager for Chicago Tube & Iron. Linda began teaching at Black Hawk College Outreach where she taught GED and office skills courses. Linda taught with a passion and enthusiasm that filled her classrooms as well as her students. She loved and cared for each of them as if they were her own and took extreme pride in watching them succeed in the classroom and in the community. Every person that she encountered was thought to have the same promise and potential of the next. This quality was uniquely her own and was a gift to all that knew her. Linda enjoyed many things in life including riverboat gaming, sports, books and a cup of tea. She was fond of her friends and fellow teachers over the years. Her friendship was unwavering and she had a special bond with her "Ya-Ya" Sisters. She was an active member of the community where she was the former Director of East Moline Silvis Soccer Club, involved in the Park Board, the Illinois Federation of Teachers, and the former St. Mary's Parish, East Moline. Nothing gave her greater joy than watching her 6 granddaughters grow and flourish. She was blessed to have the great fortune of being surrounded by them daily. Survivors include her husband, James; sons (spouses), Patrick (Edith) Glackin, Moline; and Kevin (Jennifer) Glackin, East Moline; granddaughters, Samantha, Lillian, Veronica, Abigail, Hahnah, and Margot, sisters Leah Kinnear, Monroe Township, NJ; and Jane Anne (Louie) Munch, Port Townsend, WA; many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, mother-in-law Marion and father-in-law Michael Glackin. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth.
