Marie Winfield, 86, of Torrance, California passed away peacefully from a brain tumor on Monday, November 10, 2014 at home in Torrance surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be 10:00AM Tuesday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation 4:00-7:00PM Monday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd, where a rosary will be held at 6:30PM. A memorial mass will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Torrance, California on Monday, November 24, 2014 at 10 AM with a reception to follow. Marie Therese Burns was born on August 3, 1928 at St. Anthony's Hospital Rock Island, Illinois, the daughter of Lawrence Aloysius Burns and Agnes Anna Van Hoe. She graduated from St. Anne's Catholic school in 1942 and from the Villa de Chantal High School in Rock Island in 1946. She married Richard Lee Winfield in 1951 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in East Moline. Her husband Richard, served 22 years in the military and Marie lived in Germany, Florida, and California at various bases. They settled in California in 1971 where her husband worked as an aircraft mechanic for American Airlines. Her husband died on October 20, 1986 and she remarried William Franklin on February 14, 2003 at St. Lawrence Church, in Torrance, California. Marie worked as a telephone operator for the former Illinois Bell Telephone. She also later worked as a switch board operator and admitting clerk for Little Company of Mary hospital in Torrance, California. As a girl she loved tap dancing, painting and was a girl scout. She was a long time member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Red Hat Society, The Boots and Bows and several other square dance groups, the Elks Club and St. James Golden Age Club. She supported numerous veterans groups including the Purple Heart Veterans and the Vietnam Veterans of America. She supported many service men and women by sending boxes and letters to those deployed overseas. She is survived by her husband, William Franklin, daughters Susan Ourada, Teresa Haney, Ann Baumgartner and Kristina Winfield, and her sons Raymond Winfield and Richard Winfield. She is also survived by five grandsons and five grand daughters. In addition to losing her first husband, she is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lawrence Joseph Burns.
