Marion "Pope" Long, 88, East Moline, a kind, caring, gentle man, died Friday November 23, 2012 at Select Hospital, Davenport. Graveside services are 10 AM Tuesday at Greenview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, East Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct Military Honors. Visitation is 3-6 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Memorials may be made to Quad City Honor Flight. Mr. Long was born May 3, 1924 in West Chester, IA, the son of Hugh and Irma (Dayton) Long. He served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII, serving on Tinian Island and was a tail-gunner on B-29's. He married Hazel Louise Birlew on May 10, 1945 in East Moline. He worked 20 years for the former Rock Island Lines and later was superintendent of boxcar dismantling for Evan's Railcar, Washington, IN. Pope loved life, family and friends. He enjoyed travel, gardening, fishing and camping. Mr. Long enjoyed tinkering in his garage and building one of a kind birdhouses. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Hazel, children, Susan (Steve) Doye, Moline, Beth Ann (Tim) Wittmer, Loogootee, IN, Steven (Rita) Long, Washington, IN and Robert (Nedra) Long, Plainville, IN, eight grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Gower and granddaughter, Amy Joy Long.
