Mark J. Mortier, 72, of Moline, passed away Thursday September 3, 2020 after a long, quiet and courageous battle with cancer.

Mark was born October 25, 1947 in Moline, son of Joseph and Patricia (Runge) Mortier, and was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Mark was a man of many trades, but was best known as everyone's go-to car guy. He was VP of Operations for Midas Muffler and continued as a franchise owner of the 2 Illinois QC Midas Muffler shops until "retirement." He then opened Mark's Rod Shop where he restored countless classic cars.

Mark was also a hobbyist. Tying down one favorite hobby would be a challenge. He was a hunter, birder, tinkerer, collector, and much of his retirement was spent as his alter ego "Captain Jack" participating in many cowboy shooting competitions.

A proper obituary would occupy pages. Throughout his cancer journey he was the consummate optimist even while the prognosis was grim. He did the best that he could to carry about his life by shopping, putzing on cars, shooting, window shopping at Scheels for that next gun, catching his granddaughter's softball games and spending time with friends and family.

Those left to honor him are his daughters: Aimee (Bruce) Abington, Dawn (Jim) Hickenbottom, Cory (Damian) Hiser-Mc-Climont, and Melissa Dee; grandchildren: Adam, Acacia, Sebastian, Ella and Kathryn; a sister Melanie (Scott) Verstraete; his partner-in crime: Denise Shestak and a special fur kid, Buddy.

The list of friends and family left to honor his memory are endless, yet should not go without mention.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at the Holden Cancer Center, specifically, Dr. P, Jayna, Michaele and the nurse with lavender shoes that accessed his port; Also, a staff that cared more than imaginable at Compassus Hospice.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and a memorial visitation will be held on Friday September 25, 2020 from 12-3PM at Van Hoe Funeral Home, Ltd., East Moline. A processional and burial will be at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery following the visitation.

Hop in your cars, drop the top, crank up some music and remember Mark in happy times; he wouldn't want a fuss over him.
