Mary Holmes, 85, formerly of Moline passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Hope Creek, Moline. Funeral services are 10 AM Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation is 4-6 PM Friday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Memorials may be made to Breast Cancer Research. Mary Smith was born on November 7, 1928 in Liverpool, England, the daughter of William and Mary (McCue) Smith. She married George Holmes on January 11, 1947. He died on June 29, 1997. Mary had worked in the kitchen at the former Americana Nursing Home and at Seton School, Moline. She had also worked for Stashu's Sausage Shop, Moline. Mrs. Holmes enjoyed working in her garden and loved being with her family and adored her grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Ann (Steve) Hernandez, Moline, Lynn (Dave) Pearce, Rock Island and Paul (Sue) Holmes, Colorado Springs, CO, grandchildren, Renee, Lisa and Stephen Hernandez, James Pearce, Jennifer Dorley, Heather Ximenez and Zachary Holmes, numerous great and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband George, daughter, Maureen and siblings, Maggie, Nellie, Elizabeth, and John.
