Obituary

Mary Jo Shay, 88, East Moline, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Genesis Illini, Silvis. Funeral services are 10 AM Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 2-5 PM Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 1:30PM. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Diabetes Association. Mary Jo Boens was born on April 18, 1928 in Moline, the daughter of Leo and Laura (Gremonprez) Boens. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated Class of 1946 from UTHS. She met her husband to be in 1948 at the Riverside (Moline) iceskating pond. They married on May 12, 1951 at St. Mary's Church, East Moline. She had worked in the office at John Deere Harvester for 9 years. Mary Jo loved antique furniture and enjoyed refinishing many walnut pieces. After retiring as a homemaker and the many hats she wore assisting her husband in his business and their devotion to St. Mary's Church and School, she and Bud enjoyed time in their motorhome, traveling most of the United States and Canada. She anxiously awaited the winter months, when they would head to Bonita Beach in Florida so she could search for shells and lay in the sun. Survivors include her husband, children; Laurie Shay, East Moline and Jim Shay, East Moline, grandchildren, Jennifer, Shayla and Derek and great grandchildren; Logan, Emilee, and Sarah. She was preceded in death by her parents.
