Funeral services for Mary A. Welling, 85, Rock Island, are 10 AM Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation is 2-7PM Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 1:30PM. Mary died Monday, December 20, 2010 at Trinity Regional Health Systems, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Alleman High School or to the ARC of Rock Island County. Mary DeWitte was born on October 24, 1925 in Moline, the daughter of Camiel and Margaret (Carton) DeWitte. She married Vern Welling on June 18, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Vern died July 20, 1980. Mary had worked as a medical records transcriber at the former Moline Public Hospital. She taught PE at St. Anne School, East Moline and later taught Special Ed at Rock Island High School. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was a strong supporter of Alleman High School and its sports program. Mary was an active member of the Rock Island Republican Party and served as a Republican delegate in the 2008 presidential election. Mary served as President of the Rock Island County ARC, past president of the Diocese of Peoria Women's League, and was once crowned Mardi Gras Queen. Mary lived her life at full speed, every effort she undertook and cause she championed were pursued with fervor and passion. Survivors include her children (spouses); Lisa Faust, Moline, John (Michelle) Welling, Rock Island and Jim (Deb) Welling, East Moline, grandchildren; Shannon, Luke, Andrew,and Anne, two great grandchildren, step grandchildren; Nicole, Darin and Michael, 2 step great grandchildren, brother-in-law Vince Tedesco and sister-in-law Lucille Campagna. Of all her accomplishments, Mary was most proud of her family.
