Matthew David Griffin, age 54, passed away on August 5, 2026 in Silvis, IL at his residence.

Born on April 22, 1972, to Jerald and Daisy (Hymes) Griffin, Matt was known for his quick wit, love of pranks, and infectious laugh. He was loved by many and left behind a legacy of humor, honorable service, and deep love of family and friends.

Growing up in Silvis, he was a beautiful contradiction: he was a good kid who was always looking for good natured trouble. Armed with a brilliant smile and an ornery spirit, he had a magical way of breaking the rules just enough to make life exciting and to make the best stories.

Matt graduated in 1990 from United Township High School before embarking on many adventures, making homes in 4 different states and making lasting friendships everywhere he landed.

Matt honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, where he was proudly stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Following his military service, he built a career in Information Technology, bringing his problem-solving skills to several companies over the years.

Beyond his professional achievements, Matt will be remembered as a legendary prankster. He was always the first to crack a joke and light up a room with his laugh. His bright, funny energy made him a fast friend and a favorite presence at any gathering.

Above all else, Matt loved his children deeply. He shared 22 years of marriage and a lifelong bond of co-parenting with Mary, and from that they raised two amazing children. Matt was immensely proud of Malia and Kai, a fact he made sure everyone else knew. His love for them was his greatest joy.

He is survived by his beloved children, daughter Malia Lake and her husband Nathan of Toledo, OH, and son Kai Griffin and his fiancée, Mady Yu of West Des Moines, IA ; his former wife, Mary Griffin of Waukee, IA; his parents Jerald and Daisy Griffin of East Moline, his three sisters, Faith Adams and husband Ron of East Moline, IL, Christine Swanson of West Des Moines, IA, and Michelle Miller and husband Jim of Port Byron, IL and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his material and paternal grandparents.

Inurnment will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, with Military honors on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 1:00pm. A celebration of life focusing on happier times will take place at Hope Church in Bettendorf at 3:00pm with a meal with the family to follow. Please bring a funny story to share.
