Funeral services for Michael A. Downen, 77, of East Moline, IL, will be 11:30 am Thursday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Downen died Sunday, January 10, 2016, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Mike was born February 4, 1938, in Moline, IL, the son of Nelson and Rita England Downen. He served in the U.S. Army. He received his Bachelors Degree from Western Illinois University. He married Mary Skalla April 23, 1966, in Davenport, IA. He worked as a systems analyst in the Quad Cities area and also taught at Scott Community College. After retiring, he worked part time for H&R Block. He was an avid bowler. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and Chicago Bears fan. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Downen, East Moline; children, Scott Downen, Carbondale, IL, Matthew Downen, Moline, Susannah (Ron) Borowczyk, Niantic, IL, Kathleen (Duane) Fleming, Moline, and Terry Skalla, East Peoria, IL; grandchildren, Shannon (Devin) Abel, Kimberly Borowczyk, Ethan Skalla, Hailey Borowczyk, Madeline Borowczyk and Samuel Fleming; cousin, Nancy (Owen) Stipp, Colona, IL.
