Millie was born on October 30, 1938, to Keith and Lois (Delp) Young in Davenport, IA. Millie grew up in the farm community of Erie, IL; a community focused on faith, family, and simpler times. She graduated from Erie High School in 1956. Afterwards she moved to Moline, IL, to study secretarial skills and to go to beauty school; the two primary professions available for women in the 50's. In 1960, she met and married Doug Wallace; together they raised two children, Barry and Angela. As a family they enjoyed the sport of go-kart racing and spending time at her parents farm in Port Byron, IL. Millie worked at Black Hawk College as an administrative secretary/office manager in the Counseling Department for 25 years. Millie touched many young lives during her time at Black Hawk with some students eventually calling her mom.
In 1981, they were divorced and Millie eventually re-united with one of their racing friends, George Van Thorre. They married in 1992, and were together for 35 years until George's death in June 2022. They resided in East Moline, IL.
After retirement, they began traveling to Southern Texas every winter for 22 years. The pair enjoyed biking, dancing, and boating with their close friends. Millie enjoyed flower gardening, spending time with grandkids, and hanging out with her two best friends, Sally and Sandy.
Millie belonged to Erie Christian Church, Erie; and later Calvary Church, Moline.
She is survived by her children, Angie (David) Nichols and Barry (Rose) Wallace; step daughters, Deborah (David) Neighbours, and Lisa (Paul) Walter; two siblings, Ray (Judi) Young and Pris (Bob) Bass; 11 grandchildren: Stephanie, Jenna, Jared, Scott, Brett, Logan, Madison, Gabrielle, David, Devan, and Hailey; and 7 great grandchildren: Keith, Kohen, Emmy, Eden, Millie, Jensen, and Rogue.
Millie was a caring, compassionate person, and always ready for a family or social gathering. She was drawn to giving to children's charities.
Memorials may be made to Youth Hope, Moline or to Erie Christian Church, Erie.
