IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nancy E.
Maxwell
July 27, 1928 – January 5, 2021
Nancy Evelyn Chilton Maxwell was born at home on July 27,1928, to Charles Daniel Chilton and Eva Marie (Moline) Chilton in Mahaska County, Iowa. She was the youngest of three children. Nancy attended Charter Oak Elementary School in West Des Moines Township, Iowa, and graduated from Eddyville High School in 1946. She died Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, IL, from complications of COVID-19. After graduating high school, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, to work at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She fell in love and married Donald Gordon Maxwell on September 23, 1951. He served in the Marines and they lived in Oceanside, California, while he was assigned to Camp Pendleton until he was honorably discharged. They moved back to Des Moines, Iowa, then to Rock Island, IL. They had two sons, Mark and Kevin. Her beloved husband Donald preceded her in death in 1974, after a brief illness, leaving her to raise two young teenage sons on her own. She often said she always put her family first. Nancy returned to working at Northwestern Bell when she and Don moved back to Des Moines, then transferred to Davenport, and then to Cedar Rapids where she retired from the Engineering Office in 1982. She moved back to the Quad Cities in 1988 to be close to family. Nancy was a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers and a Life Member of the Communications Workers of America. She enjoyed getting together with NW Bell friends and former co-workers whenever she could. She loved to do home remodeling, sewing, lunching with friends and family, Bible study, and playing the Lottery and the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes, "but never lucky." She especially enjoyed going to the casinos! She is survived by her two sons, Mark (Denise) Maxwell, East Moline, IL, and Kevin Maxwell, Indio, California. And her grandchildren: Mike (Elisabeth Dennis) Maxwell, Ada, Oklahoma; Katey Maxwell, East Moline; step-grandsons Jon (Talia Cushman) Young, Sherrard and Rich (Nikki) Young, East Moline. Step-great-grandchildren: Taylor Young, Cody Young, Blakely Young, Wyland Young, Alexia Cushman, Olivia Cushman and Joe Cushman. She also has family in Ankeny, Iowa, and the Ottumwa/Oskaloosa area and across the country that she kept in touch with whenever possible. She was interested in family genealogy and loved talking on the phone. A verse from a poem by David Harkins that she left for us, says in part: "You can remember her and only that she is gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on." A special thank-you to the "Angels" of Illini Restorative Care who cared for Nancy over this past year, and especially during these months of quarantine and then these past couple of weeks of illness. You all are amazing!! God bless you. Private graveside services will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Services will be live streamed 9:30am Monday at http://www.facebook.com/vanhoefuneralhome
