Funeral services for Peter John Stopoulos, 74, of Moline, IL, will be 2:00PM Saturday at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery, Moline. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00PM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a Trisagion (prayer service) will be held at 7:30. Mr. Stopoulos died Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf, IA. Memorials may be made to the United Township High School Athletic Fund. Pete was born May 11, 1936 in Moline, the son of John and Catherine Kachevas Stopoulos. He was a graduate of United Township High School Class of 1954. He married Patricia Hoover July 1, 1961 in Moline. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated The Athlete's Foot Stores for 21 years. He subsequently was employed as a Sales Associate with Del Webb/Pulte Homes in Huntley, IL. He previously served on the boards of Illini Hospital, Quad City Symphony, Redeem East Moline, DARE, East Moline/Silvis Rotary and was currently a board co-chair of the Quad City Senior Olympics. He had a life-long interest in track and field events and served as an assistant United Township High School track coach. He was a 1992 inductee into the UTHS Hall of Fame. He actively participated in Masters Track and Field events and held numerous masters track and field records. In 1991, at age 55, he set a National Senior Olympic Record in the long jump. He also earned USA Track and Field All American awards for seniors in various track and field events. He enjoyed reading, classical music, sporting events, and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Pat Stopoulos of Moline, daughters, Nicole Stopoulos (Anthony Schlegel) of Downers Grove, IL, Samantha (Todd) Cahalan of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Ava Schlegel, Alex Wernsman, Emma Cahalan, Elijah Cahalan, Annalyse Cahalan, Courtney (Jake) Eaton, Reese Cahalan, Taylor Cahalan, and Chase Cahalan; great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Eaton; sister, Christine (Roger) Miller of Naples, FL; brothers, Anthony (Joan) Stopoulos of Moline, Lee (Penny) Stopoulos of Rockford, IL, and James (Krystel) Stopoulos of Bettendorf.
