Mr. Schatteman passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA.
Ray was born January 3, 1936, in East Moline, the son of Raymond and Adeline (Leenknecht) Schatteman. He served in the US National Guard. He married Johanna Zukas April 18, 1964 at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline.
He was a member of the Bricklayers Local #7 and UAW #1304, and retired from the former Case International Harvester Plant after 25 years of service.
Ray, a man who lived life on the level—in every sense of the phrase—he leaves behind a legacy of precision, quiet vigilance, and "seeing what happens" by making fully vetted decisions.
To know Ray was to know a man with an extraordinary eye for balance. Literally everything in his world was precisely hung: pictures aligned to perfection, shelves level to the millimeter. He possessed an almost supernatural ability to "see" something out of level from across the room, and with a gentle nudge or a knowing glance, he'd set it right. This meticulous nature extended far beyond carpentry or bricklaying—it was a reflection of how he approached life itself: fair, steady, and always true.
A devoted family man, Ray kept loving tabs on his son and his family. No detail was too small; he took pride in knowing the latest milestones, offering advice when asked (and sometimes when not), and celebrating every triumph as if it were his own. He was especially proud of his grandson.
He had a keen interest in the community unfolding around him, often monitoring local construction projects with the enthusiasm of an unofficial overseer. Whether driving by a new development or chatting with friends about progress, he found joy in watching his community take shape—one beam, one brick at a time.
Above all, Ray cherished celebrating with family and friends. His home (and driveway) was a welcoming hub for good company and an impromptu cocktail. If you were lucky enough to be in his inner circle, you might have been treated to one of his legendary brandy Manhattans—mixed with expert care and served with a smile that made you feel truly special. His secret was collins cherry juice.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Johanna; son, Shawn (Nicole) Schatteman, Fontana, WI; grandson, Blake Schatteman; sisters, Dolores Bell, East Moline and Carol Ann Klauer Taylor Ridge, IL; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rose Marie VandeWiele and Rita Schatteman; brothers-in-law, Jack Bell and Bernard Klauer.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
