Obituary

Graveside services for Richard E. Slead, 78, of Sun Lakes, AZ, will be 10:00AM Friday November 6, 2009 at the National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL, military honors will be provided by the Moline American Legion Post 246. Anyone wishing to attend should meet at Van Hoe Funeral Home at 9:30 AM. Mr Slead died Saturday, October 24, 2009 in Arizona. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. He was born January 6, 1931 in Des Moines, IA, the son of Rollo Slead and Elsie Vaughn Slead. He attended Moline High School. He entered the U.S. Army November 1948 and retired from Fort Bliss, Texas March 1, 1969 with service in Korea and Vietnam. He married Lavone Van Daele Ruberg on November 23, 1973. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Moline in 1989. after 21 years of service. He and his wife Lavone moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona in 1999. He had been a member of the Svithiod Club, Vikings Thor Lodge #9, Moline, National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 318, Moline, American Legion Post 35, Chandler, AZ, and former member of the Moline American Legion Post 246, and life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was an avid reader, sportsman, and sports enthusiast. Survivors include his wife; stepsons, Bruce and David Ruberg; grandchildren, Amanda, Rachael, James, and Katie; niece Cathy Morgan and family of Beech Grove, IN; and cousins, Betty Harmon of Tuscon, AZ and Margaret Richie, Cedar Rapids, Ia., He is preceded in death by his parents and stepson, Brian Ruberg.
