Funeral services for Roger W. Covemaker, 72, of Colona, IL, will be 10:00 am Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Covemaker died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at his home due to health complications. Memorials may be made to the family. Roger was born May 14, 1941 in Rock Island, IL, the son of William D. and Dorothy Stapf Covemaker Sr. Roger graduated from Moline High School in 1959. During his four years, he received many awards and recognitions in wrestling. He married Louise Patterson June 26, 1968 in Silvis, IL. Roger served in the U.S. Marine Corp from March 1, 1962 and was honorably discharged from Camp Lejeune, NC, on February 26, 1965. His official M.O.S. was radio operator and he was assigned to 101st Airborne 2nd Division Anglico. He received medals of declarations for sharpshooters, badge rifle 7.62 mm, and M-14 and expert badges for .45 caliber pistol and parachute insignia. Roger was a master craftsman in the field of carpentry and he worked side by side with his father William Covemaker, Sr at Covemaker Construction Company. He was a foreman for Franks Construction until the 1980's, and then started R.W. Covemaker Construction Company. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 166 out of Rock Island, until his retirement in 2004. Roger was an avid hunter and sportsman and received many awards in shooting events throughout his life. He was on the Board of Directors at the Bi-State Sportsmen Association, Colona, IL for over 20 years and also held the position of Safety Director. Roger was a major contributor and resident carpenter building the sporting clays stations at the club and promoting the sport he loved and was honored to host an event at the request of John Deere to teach Russian officials how to shoot Sporting Clays. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Roger will truly miss his "Gift of Gab" and his never ending story telling abilities. Survivors include his daughters, Cindy (John) Woodford, Moline, IL, and Jennifer Butler, Coal Valley, IL; grandchildren, Emily Woodford, Tyler (Jessica) Ryckeghem, Nicholas Ryckeghem, Michael T. Butler, and Samuel Butler; mother, Dorothy Covemaker, Moline; sisters, Suzanne Neels, East Moline, Christine (Chris) Welsh, Port Byron, IL, Michelle Ball, Stafford, VA, and Tamara (Bryan) Murphy, Coal Valley; brother, William D. (Beth) Covemaker, Jr., Moline; friend and neighbor, Madeline Jones, Colona. He is preceded in death by his father and brother, Richard "Dickey" Covemaker.
