Obituary

Romanie Smet passed away at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa Feb. 22, 2009. Funeral services are 10 AM Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is 4-6PM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 4PM. Romanie Coleta Maria DeBrabander was born in East Moline, IL October 14, 1918, the daughter of Rene DeBrabander and Matilda Marie Mettepenningen. When she was a child her family returned to their homeland in Belgium. After the death of both parents, Romanie returned to the United States as a young woman. She married Ralph Hull in 1940 and they had a son Ronald Rene. She later married Charles E. Smet in 1947. Romanie and her husband Charles owned and operated the former Rene's Restaurant and Gas Station in East Moline, which they inherited from her father. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Charles and Alphonse DeBrabander, in Belgium, and her husband. She is survived by her son and wife Anita, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, three grandchildren, Kathleen Brands, Moline, IL, Brenda Nelson, Pataskala, OH and Jeremy Hull, Moline, IL., eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and close neighbors Jack and Hazel Lundeen. Romanie was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. She was a housewife all her life. She was known for her generosity and as a good neighbor. Romanie enjoyed walking her poodle, Pearl, and visiting friends.
