Ronald L. Downey, 72, Silvis, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services are 10 AM Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Visitation is 3-7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established to donate to charities of the families choice. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Ron was born December 21, 1941 in Moline, the son of Harold and Lucille (Richardson) Downey. He attended Moline schools. He married "his love", Judy Marx on August 18, 1962 at St. Malachy's, Geneseo. He retired as a millwright from Case New Holland in 2004. Ron had been a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Men's Club. He was instrumental in starting the Silvis Cruise-in that was held in conjunction with the Silvis Moonlight Parade. Ron was passionate about, vintage cars, hot rods and was a fan of NHRA's John Force. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Judy, daughters, Beth (Darren) Yusko, Moline, Cindy Griffin, Geneseo, and Kris Downey, Moline, granddaughters, Victoria and Allison, and sisters, Joanne Rodell, Moline and Debbie (Kenny) Baker, Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandy Eder. The family would appreciate fellow fans to wear their hot-rod attire and drive their cars to Ron's visitation and services. Ron's family would like to thank Genesis Hospice for their compassion and care.
