Funeral services for Refugia "Rose" Gomez, 92, Silvis, are 10 AM Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7PM Thursday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church. Rose died Monday, January 26, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island Rose was born July 4, 1916 in Silvis, IL, the daughter of Martin and Candelaria (Guerrero) Gomez. Her father was the first Mexican family man to arrive in Silvis and settled in the Silvis Yards of the Rock Island Lines. She retired from John Deere Harvester, East Moline. Elbert James joined the family and was companion to Rose until his death in 2002. She enjoyed baking, doing crafts, crocheting and knitting, and in recent years learning to make doll clothing for the youngest of the great-grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter Lupe Cortez of East Moline, grandchildren and spouses; Diane and Dale Duckworth of Davenport, David Cortez, East Moline, Lawrence and Bertha Cortez of East Moline, Marcus and Laura Cortez, Rock Island and Mario and Paola Cortez of Albuquerque, NM, nineteen great grandchildren, 31 great-great grandchildren and a great-great-great granddaughter, and sisters Jenny Cortez of East Moline and Mary Riordan of Moline. She is preceded in death by her son Jesse, sisters Amelia and Soledad, brothers; John, Frank, Emanuel, Martin, Sam, and August.
