Obituary

Funeral services for Roy Arthur Bostrom, 84, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00 AM Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00PM Sunday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 1:30PM. Mr. Bostrom died Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Trinity Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Bettendorf, IA. Memorials may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church, where he had been a member for 60 years or The ARC of South East Iowa Roy was born September 13, 1924 in Moline, IL, the son of Ivar Emanuel Bostrom and Alma Christine Vik Bostrom. He served in the US Army during World War II. He married Marion Elizabeth DeDoncker November 25, 1948 in East Moline. She died July 31, 2008. He was an award winning, well known local artist, wood carver, and illustrator. He was best known locally for his paintings of the life and community of Bishop Hill. He was also known worldwide for his illustrations of a series of children's story books published by John Deere which included, "Johnny Tractor and His Pals", "Corny Cornpicker Finds a Home" and more recently "Family Reunion" and "Centennial Surprise". He was an art director and commercial artist for Deere & Company until 1984 upon his retirement after 33 years of service. He continued his commercial art career from 1984 to 2007 at Roy A. Bostrom Design which he founded after his retirement from Deere. He was a graduate of Moline High School in 1942 and Bradley University, Bachelor of Fine Arts, in 1950. Roy served on the Board of Directors for Bishop Hill Heritage Association. He was a member of Studio 15. He also was a member of Short Hills Country Club for 30 years, and a member of Lake Davenport Sailing Club where he raced his Lightening Class sailboat, Viking II. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 315. Roy was an active member of the Isaac Walton League and many other organizations devoted to the preservation of all wildlife and the environment, especially the American Bald Eagle and the ocean's whales. Most important of all, he was a wonderful and loving father. Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Beth and Charles Cybul of Riverside, IL, Jane and William Reagan of Moline, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Jody Bostrom of Moline; grandchildren, John Bostrom, Meg Bostrom, Stephanie Reagan, and Thomas Bostrom; sister and brother-in-law, Florence "Flosie" and Stig Anderson, Rock Island, IL.
