Obituary

Our dad, Samuel D. Stang, of Moline, IL, passed from this earth Sunday evening, July 29, 2008 at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf, IA. He was 91 years young. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00AM Thursday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Thursday at the funeral home. Chaplain Douglas Schoonover, Trinity Pathway Hospice will officiate. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Trinity Pathway Hospice, Alzheimer Treatment & Research Center, Alternatives for Older Adults, or Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Dad was born September 25, 1916 in East Moline, the last of seven children born to George Henry and Rosa Marie (Rose) Stang. He married Dorothy (Bain) Slack July 10, 1937 in Crown Point, IN. They were married for 67 years before mother's passing May 24, 2005. Dad graduated from East Moline High School and had fond memories of playing in the school band. He was a member of our Greatest Generation by serving in the US Army during WWII. Dad retired as a welder from John Deere Harvester after 37 years and shortly thereafter moved mother and household to his beloved Colorado. They returned to the Quad city Area in 1986 to be with their families during their "golden years". While in Canon City, CO, dad became a Mason and was raised to a Master Mason in Lodge #15 Mount Moriah, Canon City. Both he and mother were Past Worthy Patron and Matron for the Canon City Chapter #21 of the Order of Eastern Star. Dad's greatest pleasure was traveling the highways and byways of these United States with mother, a dog, and his faithful camper trailer. He was a man's man until he took his last breath. He enjoyed the challenges of fishing, bowling, and golf in his younger years. He took great pride in his home, his yard, gardens, and his many GM cars. During quiet moments, he loved to read westerns, especially books and short stories by Louis L'Amour, and played solitaire just as his mother had played during her long life. Those who knew dad will long remember the twinkle in his eyes, his great sense of humor, and his beautiful infectious smile. To know him was to love him. He will be greatly missed, but will always be a part of many hearts. Living in honor of our dad and mother are: daughter, Darlene Stang Christison of East Moline; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Peggy Slack of Ottawa, IL, Chuck and Judy Stang of Bettendorf; 7 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; sisters-in-law, Alice Stang and Myrtle Stang both of Silvis, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister, and 5 brothers. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com The family wishes to thank Trinity Pathway Hospice for their love and compassion during dads last week on earth.
