Simone D. Starr, 89, East Moline, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Hope Creek, East Moline. Funeral services are 1:30 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is from 12:30 PM until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Activity Department at Hope Creek. Simone Denise Madeleine Vallin was born in Le Havre, France, in the region of Normandy, on April 7, 1927, to Ulysses and Suzanne (Petit) Vallin. She had one older sister Janine. She and her family survived having their home destroyed, Le Havre being completely bombed during WW II. They left Le Havre, and after the war moved to Étretat, France, where they had spent summer holidays. There she met a dashing American Army officer, Robert A. Starr, who became the love of her life. They traveled back to the USA and were married in 1947 in Youngstown, Ohio. They had two children together, Denise and Robert (Bob), II. Simone became an American citizen and she was always extremely proud of that. She was a wonderful Army officer's wife, and followed her husband in his military career - they were stationed in Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; Pirmasens, Germany; Saumur, France; Decatur, IL; Tobyhanna, PA; Chambersburg, PA; and then to the Rock Island Arsenal, IL. They retired to Moline, IL. Her husband died in 1983, and she moved to East Moline, IL. Simone was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved cats, squirrels (always named "Petey"), art, opera (Madame Butterfly was her favorite), crocheting, traveling, and her soap operas. She was very proud of her family, and was a friend to all she met. Survivors include her children; Denise (Mark) Maxwell, East Moline, and Robert (Diane) Starr II, Auburn, WA, grandchildren; Jon Young (Talia Cushman), Rich (Nikki) Young, Mike Maxwell, Katey Maxwell, Andy Starr and Anna Starr and great-grandchildren; Taylor, Cody and Blakely, 3 step-great-grandchildren, a nephew and 2 nieces, in England, and a nephew in France & their families. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Janine (Vallin) Douro.
