Funeral Services for Sonja H. Wessels, 70, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Green Rock Free Will Baptist Church, Colona, IL. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00PM Tuesday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Mrs. Wessels died Saturday, June 7, 2008, surrounded by her family, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, IL. Memorials may be made to Green Rock Free Will Baptist Church. Sonja Gysland was born December 12, 1937 in Magnolia, MN, the daughter of Gabriel and Alfa (Larson) Gysland. She married Ivan Wessels February 18, 1955 in Ellsworth, MN. Sonja began working at the former East Moline State Hospital in 1962. In 1980 she was transferred to the Dept of Corrections where she retired in 2001 after 41 years of service to the state. She loved spending time with her family, especially at the holidays. She enjoyed a good movie, having lunch with friends, or going on the riverboats! Her family and friends were so very important to her. Survivors include: her husband of 53 years, Ivan Wessels of East Moline, sons and daughters-in-law, Steve Wessels of East Moline, Dan and Marie Wessels of Colona, IL, Jeff and Lori Wessels of Silvis, IL, Brad Wessels of Janesville, WI; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; sister, Arlene Bruder of St. Louis, MO; and her cats, Sammy and Ragaby. She is preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Danielle Wessels, brother, Garfield, half brother, Oscar.
