Memorial services for Sophie B. Minas, 88, of Leesburg, FL, and East Moline, IL, are 10:30 AM Monday, October 19, 2009 at St. James Episcopal Church 204 N. Lee St., Leesburg, FL. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Moline, IL. Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, assisted the family with arrangements. Ms. Minas died Monday, August 31, 2009 at Edgewater at Waterman Village, Mount Dora, FL. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church. Sophie Minas was born March 27, 1921 in East Moline, IL, the daughter of Charles and Bessie (Pantos) Minas. She had worked for the Bell System for 38 years (Illinois Bell, AT&T, and Lucent.) She began her career as a Service Representative in East Moline and later transferred to Chicago, Detroit, MI, and New York City, NY, where she held a variety of jobs. She received a Woman of the Year Award from the New York City's YMCA Nationwide Salute to Women Achievers for Outstanding Business Achievements. She retired from Lucent in 1985 as a Branch Manager. She had been a professional Tennis Umpire. She worked in tournaments in the Chicago area. She umpired at Wimbledon for 3 years and at the U.S. Open. She had traveled the world extensively during her life. She retired to Florida in 1985, where she enjoyed many years of playing golf and bridge. She did a lot of volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, The Humane Society, The Eustis Museum, St. James Episcopal Church, and Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. She loved to sew and sold many of her items at craft shows and donated the proceeds to various charities. Survivors include a sister, Elani "Helen" Korakakis of Kalamata, Greece; many nieces and nephews including, Diane and Alex Lamacki of East Moline, IL, Deno and Barb Minas of Coal Valley, Bill and Linda Minas of Colona, IL; many great nieces and nephews including, Nick and Jackie Minas, Allison and Ian Everhard, Jimmy Lamacki, Angela Minas, and Drew Minas; great-great nephews, Caiden and Eli Minas, Avin Everhard; great-great niece, Maeli Everhard. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Sue Minas, brothers, George and James Minas.
