Obituary

Stanley E. Banaszek Jr., 82, East Moline, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Funeral services are 10 AM Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct Military Honors. Visitation is 3-7 PM Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family has asked that memorials be made to St. Anne Catholic Church or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Stan was born on October 24, 1931 in Chicago, IL, the son of Stanley and Genevieve (Walkus) Banaszek Sr. He graduated from St. Joseph, Rock Island, class of 1949. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, and had a great love of his country. He had worked at the former Tri-City Foods, East Moline, where he met his future wife. He married Betty Tvarkunas on June 1, 1957 at St. Anne's. He and his brother Tony owned and operated Ridgewood Variety, East Moline for 34 years as well as Mr. Quick and several other start up businesses. Mr. Banaszek had served on the Rock Island County Board and as South Moline Township Road Commissioner. Most recently he worked as a greeter at Van Hoe Funeral Home. He volunteered his time for many organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus Leo Council, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the East Moline Jaycee's. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame. Above all, Stanley dearly loved his family. Survivors include his wife Betty, children (spouses), Phil, Moline, Joe (Debbie), Davenport, IA, Lisa (Pat) Freeman, Liberty Township, OH, Tom, East Moline, Michele, East Moline, Dan (Michele), Moline and Christine (Dan) Rowe, East Moline, eleven grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and siblings, Theresa (Frank) DeWaele, Rock Island, Corinne (Jim) Briggs, East Moline and Anthony, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Jim, sister-in-law Paula Banaszek, his wife's parents, Peter and Lorine Tvarkunas, and brother-in-law Mike Ferretti.
