Life long resident of Moline, IL, Steven Mark Smit, 53, died November 1,2009. Mr. Smit was born March 25, 1956 to Gerald E. and Mary Jo (Brooks) Smit. He graduated United Township High School in 1974. He married Peggy Shively-Bruneel on February 5, 1983 in Silvis, IL. Known as "Smit and Smit at the Mike," Steve worked side by side with his father broadcasting local sporting events. He was an avid bowler, serving as secretary for the Milan Klassic League for many years, and was inducted into the Rock Island Bowling Assn. Hall of Fame. Steve had a passion for local theatre, supporting Playcrafters. He, along with his wife Peggy, was inducted into the Quad City Music Guild Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a very active member of the Quad Cities Cruisers Car Club. He held several positions, the most recent being Webmaster in which he developed a premier website. Some of Steve's greatest enjoyment came from sports. From announcing play by play on the radio, to working at several bowling alleys, to watching the Bears or the Hawkeyes; most of all he was a diehard Cubs fan. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his daughter, Ann Love of Rock Island, IL; grandchildren, Ray and April Love of Rock Island, IL; great-grandson Javonie Dean Meese of Rock Island, IL; brother, Jeff (Claudine) Smit of McPherson, KS; sister, Dawn (Ernie) Kelley of Ft. Myers, FL; nephew, Jayson and niece, Briana Kelley of Ft. Myers, FL; and his beloved cat, Maggie. Steve was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial celebration will be planned for the Spring of 2010. Steve loved his family, his friends, his sports, and he could charm anyone with his wonderful storytelling.
