Obituary

VELMA " FLORNELL" SCHLEETER Funeral services for Velma "Flornell" Schleeter, 96, of East Moline, IL, will be 1:00PM Monday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 1:00-4:00PM Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Schleeter died Friday, May 16, 2014, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. Flornell was born May 2, 1918, in Greensburg, Missouri, the second child of Edna(Clark) and Orville Lewis Jones. She graduated from Granger High School, where she was on the girls' basketball team. She attended college at Hannibal LaGrange in Hannibal, Missouri, for one year. Prior to that year, she taught school in the district where her father, who was on the school board, had taught 20 years before. She met Burns Schleeter in Granger and married him in Bloomington, Illinois, August 27, 1937. They lived in Granger for two years, where two of their three children were born. Following a move to Moline, IL, Burns worked for John Deere Harvester Works. In Moline their third child was born. Flornell, her husband Burns, and their three children lived on Friendship Farm Road in East Moline for years. Her husband Burns passed away in 1980. Flornell lived at the Friendship Farm Road address for more than 70 years. Flornell was the first PTA President of United Township High School. For her service, she was given a lifetime membership in the national PTA. She worked in the office at the Ben Franklin Store, Silvis. In her later years, she played bridge in several groups and often won. Survivors include her daughter Sharon (Don) Jenkins of Worden, IL, her son Gary (Jo) Schleeter of East Moline; grandchildren Dana (Robert) Asher of O'Fallon, MO, Krissa (Robert) Lubben of Sunset Hills, MO, Leigh (Eric) Johnston of O'Fallon, MO, Brian (Paula) Schleeter of Celina, TX, Luann Schleeter and fiancé Mark DuRall of Mary Esther, FL, Ben Schleeter of Peru, South America, Rodney Schleeter of IA, and Katrina Schleeter of Moline; great-grandchildren Elisabeth and Katherine Johnston and Dillon Schleeter; daughter-in-law Inez Schleeter of Waverly, TN, and sister-in-law Anna Margaret Dorsey of Kansas City, MO; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband Burns, her parents, her son Lesley of Waverly, TN, her brother Harold Jones (Marjorie) of OR, her sisters Twila Sims Humphrey(Seward, Carey) of Geneseo,IL and Ada Oliver(Paul) of East Moline and IA.
