Funeral services for Vernon E. "Smitty" Smith, 94, of East Moline, IL, will be 11:00AM Saturday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Smith died Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at his home. Vernon was born January 14, 1920, in Cupp, TN, the second oldest of 10 children born to Charles and Stella Miller Smith. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Margaret Horn March 13, 1948, in Galesburg, IL. He had worked for Minneapolis Moline, JI Case, and retired April 12, 1983, from John Deere Harvester, East Moline. Vernon loved to hunt and fish. He had been a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather, who adored the little ones. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Margaret Smith, East Moline; daughters, Nadine (Dan) Priebe, Hillsdale, IL, and Linda Taylor, Silvis; son, Kenneth (Patricia) Womack, Silvis; grandchildren, Djana Womack, Michele Womack, Tonya Womack, Darrell (Cheryl) Priebe, Pamela (John) Carius, and Kristen (Joseph) McLean; granddaughter-in-law, Teresa Womack; 25 great grandchildren; and 15 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 9 siblings, grandson, Darren Womack, and son-in-law, Jerry Taylor. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or Living Lands and Waters.
