Viola J. Mitton, 107, East Moline, passed away Friday, September 30, 2011 at Bickford Cottage, Moline. Funeral services are 10 AM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Visitation is 4-7PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Viola Johnson was born near Princeton, IL on March 9, 1904, the daughter of John and Gertrude Viola (Chasey) Johnson. Viola started as a switchboard operator for Illinois Bell in Princeton and after moving to the Quad-Cities worked as an operator and as a supervisor. She married Thomas F. Mitton on August 31, 1929 in Moline. Tom died in February of 1981. Viola was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and belonged to the Patient Circle. She enjoyed playing cards with her many generations of family. Mrs. Mitton had also worked at J.C. Penney in Moline and at Peters Bakery, Moline. Survivors include her daughter Barbara Bailey, East Moline, grandchildren and spouses; Brian and Heather Bailey, Cowlesville, NY, Laurie Bailey, East Moline, Julie and Chris Bontjes, Danville, IL, Dan Bailey, Galesburg and Beth and Craig Newquist, Sherrard, eight great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and a sister Nellie Porter, Rock Island. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
