Obituary

Wilbert H. "Bill" Johnson, 97, of East Moline, died Sunday, August 3rd, 2014 at Lighthouse of Silvis. Memorial visitation will be on Wednesday 5PM-7PM at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd. East Moline. Graveside services will be on Thursday 10AM at Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Memorials can be made to Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Unity Point Foundation or the charity of your choice. Bill was born September 29, 1916 in Moline, the son of Harold and Hulda Dahlgren Johnson. He married Katherine Gnatovich Johnson December 12, 1942. She died June 16, 1998. Bill was a lifelong resident of the area and although he had a variety of employment, he was never without a job. He was known to work multiple jobs at times to provide for his family. He would especially like to remember friends and customers at Tri-City Pack, Publix Office Supply and Cattlemen's Meat Market. He was always quick with a joke or a story. Some of those stories were even true. It should be known in his passing that he never did fight Joe Louis, pitch successive no hitters with different arms, score a layup under the legs of Wilt Chamberlain or play for the Chicago Bears, nor was he the bombardier on the Enola Gay. He was a family and friends first type of person. As proud as he was of his family, he was even more attached to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. And there was also "Sid" the cat who kept him company the last seven years. Survivors include his sons; Wayne and Lucinda Johnson, Massachusetts, Gary and Linda Johnson, Moline and Steve and Nancy Johnson, Rock Island; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Chester and sisters Mildred and Frances.
