Dr. William H. Kleinschmidt, M.D., F.A.C.P., prominent area physician, 89, of East Moline, IL, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, IL. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, East Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 2:00-7:00 PM Thursday (today) at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials may be made to The Kleinschmidt Charitable Foundation c/o Community Foundation of the Great River Bend for medical scholarships, St. Johns Lutheran Church, East Moline, or a charity of choice. Dr. Kleinschmidt was born October 19, 1918 in Chicago, IL, the son of William L. and Bertha (Febey) Kleinschmidt. He graduated from Austin High School in Chicago, IL. He received his B.S. in Medicine from Northwestern University in 1941 and his Doctorate of Medicine from Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1944 where he was a member of Phi Rho Sigma. He served a rotating internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL from 1944 to 1945 and in 1947 was appointed Staff Resident in the Dept. of Internal Medicine. He completed post-graduate study for a Fellowship in Pathology and Residency in Internal Medicine from Northwestern University Medical in 1950. He was licensed in the State of Illinois as a Physician, Surgeon and for Controlled Substance in 1946. He was certified to practice in the Specialty of Internal Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1962 and was also elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1968. He then continued his education in Internal Medicine from the American Medical Association and the American Board of Internal Medicine from 1969 through 1991. His education was temporarily interrupted for two years to serve in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Munich, Germany, a veteran of World War II in 1945. In 1947, he returned from Fort Lewis, Washington where he was stationed to complete a three-year residency in Internal Medicine followed by a two-year residency in Hematology at Cook County Hospital. He entered private practice in 1951 as an Internist and became an Associate of Drs. Garside & Boice in Chicago, IL. Recalled by the U.S. Army in 1952, he was stationed in Munich, Germany, discharged as a Captain in 1953. In the fall of 1953, Dr. Kleinschmidt resumed his private practice of Internal Medicine, specializing in internal medicine and hematology in East Moline, IL where he practiced until 1992. Then working as a part-time physician at Medical Arts Outpatient Clinic up to 1995 and at Illini Convenient Care Clinic up to 1999. He then retired from practice. Bill married LaDorice C. Sward, R.N. in 1946. They resided in East Moline, until she died in 1997. Later, Bill married Myra (Kerker) Hunter. They also resided in East Moline. Dr. Kleinschmidt was a member of the American Medical Association, a member of the American Heart Association and a Member of the Council to the Illinois Society of Internal Medicine. He was a life member and Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member & former president of the Rock Island County Medical Society. A staff member and former president of the Medical Staff of former Lutheran Hospital, Moline Public Hospital and Illini Hospital; a courtesy staff member of former Franciscan Hospital. He was on staff at Augustana Hospital and was a teaching associate at Cook County Hospital, affiliated with the University of Illinois. His hobbies included listening to music on his elaborate hi-fi stereo, emailing and sending pictures across the web, traveling (especially to Maui), photography, fishing, model trains, gourmet cooking, and as of late reading inspirational books, listening to inspirational CDs and his XM radio, along with watching the movies he missed during his years of medical practice. He loved spending time with his family, talking and laughing with friends and people from all walks of life. He loved his Lord God, his Lutheran Church, witnessing often to others, a long standing member of St. John's Lutheran Church in East Moline and as a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island. He was admired and revered by many in the community and more so by those who loved him. Survivors include: his wife, Myra C. Kleinschmidt of East Moline; daughter, Joann K. Hill of Bettendorf, IA; grandsons (spouse), Jonathan William Hill of Kansas City, MO, Jeffrey T. (Emily) Hill of Houston, TX; stepdaughters (spouses), Sara (Dan) Smeltzly, Port Byron, IL, Emily Hunter (Tim Wright), Rock Island; stepsons(spouses), Paul (Sharon) Hunter, Rowlett, TX, Brian Hunter, Bettendorf, Peter (Krista) Hunter, West Frankfort, IL; step grandchildren; Rebecca and Eric Norman of Port Byron, Sarah and Hannah Hunter of Rowlett, Brooke Smeltzly of Port Byron, Olivia Hunter of West Frankfort, and Delaney Wright of Rock Island.
