Funeral services for William W. "Bill" Layman, 84, of East Moline, IL, will be 1:00 PM Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation will be 3-6 PM Sunday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3PM. Mr. Layman died Thursday, October 4, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, IL. Memorials may be made to the Monsignor Cleary Endowment fund or to the family. Bill was born September 13, 1923 in Moline, IL, the son of William M. and Violet (Warren) Layman. He married Josephine Marx March 2, 1946 in East Moline. She died December 22, 1999. He was a graduate of United Township High School. He served in the US Navy during WWII as an Electricians Mate Third Class, being stationed in the Tinian Islands in the Marianas. He worked as an electrician at Farmall in Rock Island for 42 years. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and the AMVETS. Bill enjoyed spending time with his children and attending all activities of his grandchildren. He loved watching them play baseball, basketball, soccer, and UT Panthers Marching Band. He enjoyed going fishing. He was known to many by the hat he wore with the inscription, "Just Call Me Grandpa". Bill was a wonderful caretaker of others for many years. Survivors include: daughter, Lori Ann Howard of East Moline, son, William D. of East Moline; grandchildren (spouse), Bill, Matthew, and Zachary Layman, Katie (Brett) Ommen, Shaun Slonecker, and Ryan Howard; great grandchildren, Avelyne Walk, Dylan Joe Slonecker, and Augustine E. Ommen; son-in-law, Frank Slonecker of Hampton, sisters-in-law, Barbara Miller of Rock Island, IL, Helen Coones of Kansas; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and daughter, Linda Slonecker. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com.
