William (Bill)L. Meyers with homes in East Moline IL & Melbourne FL. died Saturday 23, 2008 at Holmes Regional Medical Center Melbourne FL. after a long and galiant battle with Diabetes, Heart & Kidney disease. Service will be held 10 AM Monday March 3, 2008 at First Christian Church Moline, IL. Visitation will be 2-6PM Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home East Moline, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. In lieu of flowers a Bill Meyers Memorial Scholarship Fund is being set up through the East Moline-Silvis Kiwanis Club P.O. Box 322 East Moline, IL. Memorials may also be made to the scholarship fund. Bill was born November 20th, 1937 in Moline, IL., to Charles & Lois (Gager)Meyers Sr. He married the love of his life Barbara J. Rasmussen on December 10th, 1960. Bill graduated from United Townships High School and then joined the United States Air Force from 1956 - 1960, stationed in Ramstein Germany as a weather observer. He worked 34 years for the United States Postal Service. In his early years with the Post Office he was Supervisor at the Rock Island Section Center, then went on to become Postmaster in Leclaire. He retired in April 1997 while Postmaster in Eldridge Iowa. He was a member of First Christian Church, Moline. He served the church as a Deacon, Elder, Chairman of the Church Board, and sat on many committees through the years, including personnel and finance. He served 10 years on the Wee Care Day Care Board of Directors. Bill was a board member on the United Township High School Board and a United Township Booster. He was a Special Olympics Volunteer. He also was a long time member of the National Association of Postmaster of the United States and the Scott County Postmasters. He was a 35-year active member of the East Moline-Silvis Kiwanis where he had 34 years of perfect attendance. He was chairman of various district committees under 9 different Governors. At State level he had been a 3 times field secretary and Lieutenant Governor of District 17. He was President of the past Lieutenant Governor's group. His dedication to Kiwanis and the children in the community earned him the prestigious Kiwanis Hixson Award. Bill loved his family, friends, and community although he couldn't wait to get to his home in Florida when fall set in. He loved to golf and bake his famous sheet cakes. He and Barb enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world. Bill leaves behind his adoring wife, Barbara. His loving children; daughter Laura Meyers-DePaepe, East Moline; Son and daughter-in-law Scott and Sandy Meyers, Melbourne FL. Three grandsons who he lived and breathed for; Scott and Tanner DePaepe, East Moline; and LCpl. Travis Meyers, Camp Lejeune, NC. & his fiance Sunny Montfort, FL., and Brother & Sister-in-law John J. & Pam Meyers, Rock Island and Sister-in-law & Brother-in-law Linda & Ron Miller, Moline. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Father, and 2 brothers Donald J. Meyers & Charles L Meyers Jr.
