Elizabeth "Bette" Van Tieghem Obituary

Funeral services for Elizabeth Arlene “Bette” Van Tieghem, 95, of East Moline, IL, will be 1 PM Tuesday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Visitation will be 11 AM - 1 PM prior to services at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Mrs. Van Tieghem passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Park Vista, East Moline.

Bette DeBo was born August 16, 1928, in East Moline, the daughter of Maurice S. and Alta (Ishmael) DeBo.

 

She graduated from United Township High School in 1946 and began her employment at the Moline National Bank and eventually First Midwest National Bank. She was instrumental in forming a western Illinois Branch of National Banking Women in 1978, where she served as president. Her career spanned thirty-one years when she retired in 1986 as Vice President and Cashier. She also volunteered at the Rock Island County Historical Society for many years.

 

She was previously married to Jackson Lyle Williams who passed away in July of 1990. She later married Albert R. Van Tieghem Sr., in March of 1996.

After marrying Albert, the couple traveled extensively, enjoying all seven continent and viewing many animals in their own environment including, African safaris, Arctic polar bears, Antarctic penguins as well as whales and birds. Al and Bette at one time joined the circus, actually as volunteers and other endeavors to help Circus Sarasota grow. Although their travels slowed down they continued to enjoy Sarasota which had become their home in 2002.

She is survived by her husband, Al Van Teighem Sr.; daughter, Wendy Sue Schleich and son-in-law, Randal Kent Schleich; granddaughter, Emily Marie Schleich; great grandson, Thaddeus M. Schleich; step children, Nancy (Gary) Frye, Carolyn (Stephen) Haines, Diane Dryden, Albert R. (Brenda) Van Tieghem Jr., and Robert (Judy) Van Teighem; 10 step grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren; 7 nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; a step grandson, Kyle Roseman; and brother, Maurice S. DeBo Jr.

 

Memorials may be made to the Rock Island County Historical Society, American Cancer Society, or the Jackson L, and Bette A, Williams Charitable Foundation, Inc.
